Liberated Press

I've been featured on The Liberated Press, issue #2 with the design I posted here a few months ago [link].
This is a very cool project promoted by Liberty Studio "We're not posh we are arts and crafts."

Anyone can submit their work and it doesn't have to be necessarily a design piece. On their website you can read that "The Liberated Press is a lovingly created free quarterly lo-fi mode of communication that aims to celebrate creativity with a truly independent and rebellious spirit. Inspired by 60’s & 70’s underground counter culture, zines and handmade revolutionary propaganda, our aim is simple; to create a periodical that is subversive, collectible & coveted. A platform for emerging talent, providing space for writers, artists and designers to explore their creativity in print. Computers are used sparingly. We still have the blisters on our hands to prove it".

I was one of the five students from London College of Communication that were featured in this issue, including Eurico and other two people from the second year of our course.

Ditto Press // Risograph

And this is how far I got on the Ditto Press project.

Not far, I know, guess i'm just trying some typography tests though it's pretty much certain that this big fat chocking promo letters won't be featured on the final piece. Part of the research I'd say.

I'm really excited about the project being the print and illustration passionate that I am. But I'm not really feeling how the workshops we're doing at lcc will help us throughout the project. From what I'm seeing it's demotivating a lot of people involved which is pretty sad since this is one really interesting project.

For those who don't really know what I'm talking about: I'm supposed to do a piece of design for a small printing company called Ditto Press which uses a risograph machine. The goal of this piece is to demonstrate the possibilities of the machine, from colours to detail quality and at the same time represent the style of the company itself.

Isto vem muito muito atrasado, pelo que peço desculpa, mas eu tenho andado tão ocupada com colagens, pdfs, ilustrações para um cliente, organizar uma exposição e ainda perder o meu precioso tempo no consulado português. Por isso sim, têm sido umas semanas complicada, e sem tempo por o blog, sorry.

As imagens acima são da segunda sessão de ppd em que nos pediram para partir à aventura em farringdon / old street / shoreditch em busca de estúdios, para fotografar ou até mesmo entrevistar. Não tivemos muita sorte com estúdios uma vez que os que visitámos não tinham pessoas disponivéis para falar connosco. Mas foram muito simpáticos, deram-nos e-mails e pediram que voltássemos mais tarde, mas infelizmente não pudémos.
Os pontos altos da nossa 'viagem' foram uma loja onde fazem livros à mão, e o Kings Corner Project.
No primeiro tivemos a oportunidade de entrevistar o dono e uma funcionária, que estudou na LCC. Foi muito interessante ver como os livros eram feiros e apreciar a arte implicita em cada técnica.
O Kings Corner Project é uma organização de juventude onde se podem fazer muitas actividades, incluindo sergirafia, e de graça. Foi uma bela descoberta para resumier uma manhão gelada.

I know this comes very very late, and I'm sorry but I've been so busy with the collages, the pdf, some illustrations I had to do for a client, organizing an exhibition and wasting precious time at the portuguese consulate. So yeah, it has been a rough couple of weeks, and no time for the blog, sorry.

So the pictures above are from the 2nd ppd session - we were asked to go out and about around farringdon / old street / shoreditch to visit design studios, get some pictures of it and maybe some interviews. We didn't have much luck with studios since in every one we visited no one was available to talk to us. But, they were very kind, giving us e-mails and telling us to come back later, but unfortunately we couldn't.
I think the highlights of our 'journey' were a handmade book shop, and the Kings Corner Project.
The first one we got a chance to interview the owner and an employee, who studied at LCCl. It was very interesting to see how the books were made and appreciate the art within every technique.
Kings Corner Project is a youth organization where you can do loads of activities once registered, which one of those includes screen printing, for free. It was a good discovery to sum up a cold morning.

Este estúdio com base em França, fundado em 2009, tem uma colecção de trabalhos bastante rica e inspiradora. Gosto especialmente da abordagem no packaging de cds e capas de vinis. O trabalho em ilustração e tipografia é tamém bastante inspirador uma vez que têem um estilo tão contemporâneo e diversifacado.

This studio based in France, founded in 2009, has a very rich and inspiring collection of works. I especially like their approach on their cd packaging and vinyl covers. Their illustration and typography work are really inspiring, because they have such a contemporary and diversified style.

Para uma - nas palavras deles - pequena agencia criativa - estes rapazes (?) têem um esplêndido portfolio. O estilo "colagem" é muito apelativo e estou espantada com a perícia que têm ao fazerem isto sem parecer demasiado, au contraire, é de facto muito interessante. For - in their words - a small creative agency - these guys have a stunning portfolio. Their collage style is very very appealing and I'm amazed with their skills to make this without being "to much", au contraire, it's indeed very interesting. They work in a wide range of areas of expertise and still they manage to keep true to their style and always innovative which is not always easy with this type of style of design.

#3 Ill Studio

Este estúdio baseado em Paris tem um trabalho muito forte e consistente. Os editorias são qualquer coisa de espectacuar. Adoro a maneira como jogam com as cores - normalmente tons pastéis - com imagens e símbolos.
A sua imagem geométrica, simétrica e simples é algo muito apelativo e forte, e considero o uso da cor de génio.

This Paris-based studio has a very strong and consistent work. Their editorials really are truly amazing. I love the way they play with colors - normally pastel tones - with images and symbols.
Their geometric, symmetric and simple image is also very strong and appellative, and I find their color use genius.

# 4 Toko

Àparte do portfolio surpreendente, Toko tem também um assombroso website muito prático, que é aliás o meu favorito deste grupo. Os seus trabalhos são bastante consistentes e também muito experimentais o que por vezes é difícil de combinar. Mas pelos vistos os Toko conseguem trabalhar muito bem com ambos. O seu estilo confina-se ao minimal e geométrico, e com um brilhante uso de textura e fotografia.

Apart from their amazing portfolio, Toko has a stunning and very practical website, which is my actual favorite of the bunch. Their work is very consistent and also very experimental which sometimes can be hard to combine. But Toko really seems to work very well with both. Their style confines to minimal and geometric, with a brilliant use of texture and photography.

#5 I Love Dust

Last but not least, está esta "design-boutique" de Londres, que além de partilharem comigo uma paixão por bicicletas, têm um portfolio muito bom. A pesquisa de tipografia é algo especialmente apelativo para mim, pela qualidade, creatividade e estilo. Considero bastante interessante o facto de nos seus trabalhos de ilustração parecer que não há limites para a imaginação e criatividade, mas no trabalho gráfico e editorial mantêem-se muito simples e descontraídos, e conseguem trabalhos bastante interessantes e comunicativos em ambas as áreas.

Last but not least, this london based "design-boutique" apart from sharing with me the love for bicycles, has a really good portfolio. Their type research is specially appealing to me, for the quality, creativity and style. I find it very interesting that on their illustration work it seems that they have almost no boundaries for their imagination and creativity, but then on their graphic and editorial they keep it very simple and laid back, yet both are very interesting and communicative.

Na aula de P.P.D. - Project Presentation and Debate - discutimos os métodos de avaliação adoptados pelos nossos tutores, aquando a avaliação dos nossos trabalhos, o que incluiu uma breve compreensão de todas as categorias de avaliação, e apresentações de grupo das categorias específicas.

Após essa discussão, demos ouvidos a dois estudantes do segundo ano, que nos explicaram o processo e conteúdo do nosso ano, como eles se adaptaram, as diferenças que sentem entre os dois anos e mostraram-nos ainda os trabalhos que fizeram no primeiro ano. Foi interessante ver alguém do "futuro" falar sobre o nosso ano, deram-nos (alguns) bons conselhos.
O ultimo exercício consistiu em fazermos a avaliação dos trabalhos finais do primeiro ano, do passado ano lectivo. Foi uma boa oportunidade não só para ver o que nos espera mais adiante mas também uma excelente forma de percebermos o que é estar no lugar do avaliador, o que essa posição compreende em si e as dificuldades que os tutores têem de enfrentar.

A avaliação é algo bastante complexo, e o facto de termos tido um workshop inteiramente focado em fazer-nos perceber do que se trata e como é feita, é uma grande prova da vontade de implantação de uma boa comunicação entre estudante e professor que existe neste curso, sendo que essa vontade parte dos tutores em vez do aluno, o que acontecia nas belas artes por exemplo, e na maioria das escolas e faculdades.

In P.P.D. we discussed the methods of evaluation adopted by our tutors, when it comes to evaluate our works, which included a succinct comprehension of all the evaluation categories, and group presentations of specific categories.

After that discussion, we were all ears for two students of the second year of our course, who explained us the process and content of the first year, how did they adapt to it, the differences between the two years and they also showed us some of the works they did in the first year. It was interesting to see someone from the "future" talking about our year, they gave us (some) good advice.
The last exercise consisted in making an evaluation of the final projects of the first from last year. It was a good opportunity not only to see what lies ahead, but also a excellent way to understand what it is to be in the position of the tutors, what it comprehends and the difficulties the tutors have to face.

The evaluation is something pretty complex, and the fact that we had a workshop entirely focussed on making us understand what it's all about and how it's done, is a great proof of the will of deployment of a good communication between student and tutor that exists in this course. Here, that will starts with the tutors rather than with the students, like what used to happen in FBAUP for instance and in grand part of schools and colleges.

Shoredtitch é sempre um lugar giro de se visita, e o Paul fez um bom trabalho como nosso guia, salvo seja.

Typographicalassemblage da autoria de Lou Dorfsman foi admirável de se ver e o ponto mais alto do dia. (Kemistry, a exibição tem o mesmo nome). Fiz uma reinterpretação desta peça, que é um painel enorme que se encontrava na cafetaria da CBS em NY. Já havia uma reprodução dessa parte do painel na exibição e foi por isso que a escolhi.
É sobre comida, o painel, e como comida normalmente significa sujidade, peguei nos buraquinhos das letras que me lembraram de gotas e exagerei (um bocadinho).

O White Cube também foi giro. É de borla, o que é bom e também o facto de termos tido esta oportunidade para comparar o trabalho de um designer com o de um artista. Mais tarde visitamos a YCN, têem um biblioteca muito boa gostei imenso, e depois a Artwords Bookshop, e foi mãos aos livros, yey!

Shoreditch is always a cool place to visit, and Paul did a good job as our guide, so to speak.

Typographicalassemblage by Lou Dorfsman was pretty cool and pretty much the highlight of the day. (Kemistry, exhibition with the same name) I did a reinterpretation of this piece, a the enormous panel that was originally at CBS cafeteria in NY. There was already a reproduction of that piece in the exhibition and that's why I chose that bit. It's all about food, and food can be messy, so I took the holes from the letters that remind me of drops and exaggerated that a (little) bit.

The White Cube was pretty cool too. It's cool it's free and it was a good opportunity to compare the work of a designer with a work of an artist.
Later we visited YCN, and I really enjoyed their library, and then the Artwords Bookshop, hands on the books, yey!

Diana and Image Workshop

Comprei uma Diana! Yey! Foi para encher o vazio da minha alma devido à suposta perda do moleskine que já rabisco há dois anos.

Workshop de Imagem com o Darren, o Jedi. Chegamos atrasados depois de uns precalços menores com as bicicletas, tão menores que nem me lembro do que se tratou.

Definir desenhar, pediu-nos para defenirmos desenhar. Mais uma discussão em grupo seguido de trocas de ideias. Não sei porquê (sei sei) mas pedem-nos para fazermos muitos grupos. Depois fui dos poucos que pos o dedo no ar quando perguntaram se nos sentíamos à vontade com o desenho. Eu disse que sim, mas só eu sei como me arrependi, quando, depois de uma voltinha pela sala vi os desenhos de um objecto aleatório na nossa mala feitos pelos coleguinhas. Eu sinto-me à vontade a desenhar, gosto de desenhar e sempre tive grandes notas a desenho, mas havia desenhos mesmo bons naquela sala, por isso eu sou uma porcaria.
Seguiu-se desenho cego (oh não, outra vez não) e desenho com a mão direita. A diana até parecia a diana, mas o ipod ficou de tal forma que nem merece aparecer aqui. O desenho cego é bastante popular em Portugal (acho que se pode dizer isso), mas aqui é visto como uma espécie de força jedi, encontrar a luz, coisas assim, que giro.
Enfim, passado o primeiro trauma, redesenhar uma folha descontruindo. Um exercício engraçada (mais uma vez, nada que eu já não tenha feito na soares), mas deu para fazer e ver coisas giras que se podem fazer com uma folhinha, imagine-se agora com o cristo rei.

E depois, o divertido: colagens. colagens colagens colagens. Foi aqui que tive um (outro) ataque de pânico por pensar que estava a ter um ataque cardíaco ou um AVC - não é uma forma de expressão. E as colagens não me correram muito bem.

Tenho de fazer 100 para uma exposição onde se vão encher paredes com estas peças. Muito engraçado mas estou a prever um futuro pesadelo.

I bought a Diana! Yey! I did to fill the hole in my soul derived from the alleged loss of the moleskine I've been doodling on for two years.

Image Workshop with Darren, the Jedi. We arrived late to the class before some minor mishaps with the bikes, so minor that I don't even remember what it was.

Define draw. He asked us to define draw. Another group discussion followed by another exchange of ideas. I don't know why (I do) but they ask us to form groups a lot. After that I was one of the few to raise my hand when asked if we felt comfortable at drawing. I sad yes, but I only know how I regret it when after seeing all the draws of random objects across the room by my colleagues. I do feel comfortable drawing, I like drawing and I've always had great marks at school in drawing classes. But there were some good drawings in that room, and for that I suck.
Next, blind drawing (oh no, not again) and drawing with the right hand. Diana kind off looked like Diana, but the iPod was at such a state it didn't even deserved to be here. Blind drawing is quite popular in Portugal (I think you can say that), but here it's like some sort of jedi force, the reaching of the light, stuff like that, how cute.
Oh well, first trauma gone, redraw a leaf, deconstructing it. A fun exercize (once again nothing I haven't done in soares), but it was an opportunity to do and see cool stuff. The things you can do from a little leaf, imagine what you can do from cristo-rei.

And the, the fun: collages. Collages, collages, collages. At this time I had (another) panic attack thinking I was having a heart attack or a stroke - and its not a sort of speech. And so the collages did not go quite well for me.

I have to do 100 of those for an exhibition where walls will be fulfilled whit these pieces. Quite nice, but I'm predicting a future nightmare.

Ficou tudo uma grande confusão, acho que é sempre esse o resultado quando falamos de jornais + recortes.

Em grupo, cropamos as imagens, para lhes dar outros sentidos.

Sozinhos, escolhemos imagens completamente random de jornais e tentamos da-lhes uma narrativa. Isso sim foi dificil, o que não deixa de ser interessante.

O último exercício talvez tenha sido o que mais gostei, imagens random com títulos random. No ínicio estava mesmo frustrada, eu sei lá quem é o Sr. Este e o Sr. Aquele (os jornais que comprei à pressa na hora de almoço eram tipo Correio da Manhã locais) e também não tive muita sorte com as imagens. Mas consegui (ou conseguimos, porque foi mais ou menos em grupo com o Eurico) fazer uns posters bem engraçados.

The Narrative

It all ended in a big mess, which I think is always the result when we think journals + scissors.
In group we cropped images to give them new senses.

Alone, we picked up random images and tried to give them a new narrative. Now that was difficult, but interesting none the less.

The last task may well be the one I appreciated the most: random images and random titles. At the beginning I was quite frustrated, because I don't really know who Sir This and Sir That are (the journals I bought at lunch time where like local tabloids) and I was also not really lucky with the pictures. However I've accomplished (or we've accomplished, since I kind of paired up with Eurico) to put together nice posters.

The walls were nice at the end of the workshop, a bit like those in the policial movies when the hero discovers the murder's cave, really good.

I can't say that this was nothing I haven't already done in Soares (my last school), but it was a different challenge. I liked it. And I like what I did to Prince Charles.

É interessante ver que em tão pouco tempo já começo a reparar nas coisas de um modo pouco diferente. Não totalmente diferente, apenas de forma mais apurada. It's nice that. Para isso contribuiu não só este workshop mas também o jogo de imagens e texto da aula de VCT de hoje.

I find it quite interesting to notice that I've already started to look at things in a bit different way. Not totally different, just in a more accurate way. It's nice that. Not only did the blog workshop contributed to this effect but also the images and text game we played today at VCT.

Apart from this, the only thing I can had is that I'm quite curious about tomorrow's welcoming event, let's see.

O primeiro projecto da faculdade é criar (continuar) um blog, com reflecções e relatos do nosso progresso ao longo do ano/curso. Achei a ideia fantástica, porque sempre tive blogs, e com este mantenho um affair de mais de dois anos, e que vai ser o hóspede desse projecto. Não vou deixar de falar português, e os textos em inglês vão ser traduzidos o mais à letra possível.

Agora ali com a coluna das "etiquetas", podem encontrar esse processo sob a etiqueta de "LCC". Provavelmente irá haver tags a coincidir com "personal work" ou "london" por exemplo, mas tudo que é feito na lcc e parte deste projecto estará registado com essa tag, óbvio. Consequentemente, este blog vai ter posts mais frequentes, e com mais blá blá que provavelmente ninguém lê. E é por isso que me estou a cagar para o que aqui estou a escrever.

E se vamos falar de LCC (eu não costumo falar muito aqui, mas tem de ser) falo-vos daquilo que mais gosto nesta faculdade (até agora): as putas das bicicletas lindas paradas à frente do átrio da escola. Muitos sabem que sou fanática por bicicletas (em portugal tenho duas, mais uma emprestada) e a onda das bicicletas nesta cidade fascina-me simplesmente. Se alguém me quiser visitar a mim ou ao Eurico aqui em Londres, a primeira coisa que vos faço é por a andar de bicicleta, foda-se.

The first college project is to create (continue) a blog, with reflections and reports of our progress troughout the year. I thought that this was a fantastic idea, because I have blogs since forever, and with this one in particular I maintain an affair for more than two years, and it's going to be the host for this project. I won't quit writting in portuguese, and the english texts will be translated as roughly as possible.

Now with the new "tag" column, you'll find this whole process under the "lcc" tag. Probably some tags will coincide with this one, such as "personal work" or "london" for example, but everything I do that's part of this specific project will be registered under the "lcc" tag, obviously. Consequently, this blog will be posted on more frequently, and with more bla bla and stuff that probably no one reads. And that's why I don't give a shit for what I'm writting.

And if we're talking about LCC (I don't usually talk that much around here, oh well) I'll tell just what I like the most about this college (so far): the motherfucking beautiful bicycles parked in front of the school's atrium. A lot of you know that I'm crazy about bicycles (back in Portugal I have two, plus one borrowed) and the bike fever in this town simply fascinates me. If anyone wants to visit me or Eurico here in London, the first thing I'll get you to do is to ride a fucking bike.
